Conditional Admission for Master Level Applicants
Applicants who cannot demonstrate the English proficiency required for full admission may be granted conditional admission in the following manner:
- Students with scores of 5.0 to 5.5 on IELTS™ or score between 450 to 524 on Institutional TOEFL®, or 45 to 70 on the Internet-Based TOEFL®, may be conditionally admitted and are required to enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week of ESL 400 classes.
- Students with scores of 4.5 on IELTS™ or scores between 400 to 449 on Institutional TOEFL®, or 32 to 44 on the Internet-based TOEFL®, may be conditionally admitted and are required to enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week of ESL 300 classes.
- Students with scores of 4.0 on IELTS™ or scores between 350 and 399 on Institutional TOEFL®, or 19 to 31 on the Internet-based TOEFL® may be conditionally admitted and are required to enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week of ESL 200 classes.
- Students with scores below 3.5 on IELTS™ or scores below 349 on Paper-Based TOEFL® or Institutional TOEFL®, or below 18 on Internet-based TOEFL® may be conditionally admitted and are required to enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week of ESL 100 classes.
| Course | Institutional TOEFL® | Internet-based TOEFL® | IELTS™ |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESL100 | 349 | 18 | 3.5 |
| ESL200 | 350 to 399 | 19 to 31 | 4.0 |
| ESL300 | 400 to 449 | 32 to 44 | 4.5 |
| ESL400 | 450 to 524 | 45 to 70 | 5.0 to 5.5 |
Minor deviations from the guidelines can be approved by consultations between the ESL instructor(s) and the academic advisor.
Students admitted conditionally can take the official TOEFL®/IELTS™ or the university-administered Institutional TOEFL® to demonstrate proficiency. Students who meet the proficiency requirement will have their conditional status removed and be granted full admission. Students who do not pass the TOEFL®/IELTS™ test need to take ESL courses at SVU to fulfill the English proficiency requirements until they receive at least a grade of .B. in the ESL 300 or ESL 400 classes.
Being enrolled in ESL classes will slow down the progress in degree classes. For example, the MBA program can normally be completed in 3 trimesters; however, attending ESL classes will most likely extend the time to obtain the MBA degree. The number of degree classes that students who simultaneously attend ESL classes are allowed to take is decided by the student advisor subject to review by the university administration.
